Blue Ocean Press Registers for FSC, SFI & PEFC Chain of Command Certification
Blue Ocean Press is proud to announce the registration for triple certification. This arduous and very expensive process is another way BOP proves our corporate responsibility. We are dedicated to doing everything possible to be as "green" as we can be. We anticipate receiving our certification in February 2009. You may have heard the new buzzword, "FSC Certified" but what does it mean? We're here to break it all down for you.

FSC - FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL
(INFORMATION PROVIDED BY FSC.org)
Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
Trying to do the right thing and buying responsibly produced products can be confusing. The FSC label makes it easy to make the right choice when buying timber or paper products. Here is why choosing FSC makes a difference:
* prohibits conversion of natural forests or other habitat around the world
* prohibits the use of highly hazardous pesticides around the world
* prohibits the cultivation of genetically modified trees (GMOs)
* respects the right of indigenous peoples around the world
* controls each certified operation at least once a year - and if they are found not to comply, the certificate is withdrawn

SFI - SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY INITIATIVE
(INFORMATION PROVIDED BY SFIprogram.com)
Hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals - from forest managers to conservation groups - are saying yes to the SFI program, and the numbers continue to climb. Almost 500 organizations are meeting the program's rigorous forest certification standard, tracking the source of their fiber through its chain-of-custody certification and/or applying its comprehensive fiber procurement requirements.
Forest managers or owners are saying yes to SFI by promoting sustainable forest management on their own lands and sharing this knowledge when they buy fiber from non-certified land.
Manufacturers and printers are using SFI labels to demonstrate their corporate social responsibility, showing customers they care about forest management and meeting the growing demand for SFI-labeled products.
Retailers are featuring SFI-labeled products to attract environmentally aware customers who want to buy forest products from legal, responsible sources.
Consumers are looking for the SFI label so they can support organizations that care about how forests are managed.
Conservation groups are working with SFI Inc. and program participants on projects designed to achieve common environmental goals.
Government officials are creating procurement policies that give preference to certified products from credible programs such as SFI.
Resource professionals are partnering with SFI Inc. and SFI
Implementation Committees to promote and strengthen forest management practices across North America and responsible procurement globally.

PEFC - PROGRAMME FOR THE ENDORSEMENT OF FOREST CERTIFICATION
(INFORMATION PROVIDED BY PEFC.org)
The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.
PEFC is a global umbrella organisation for the assessment of and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governmental processes for the promotion of sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world's forest area.
PEFC has in its membership 35 independent national forest certification systems of which 25 to date have been through a rigorous assessment process involving public consultation and the use of independent assessors to provide the assessments on which mutual recognition decisions are taken by the membership. These 25 systems account for more than 200 million hectares of certified forests producing millions of tonnes of certified timber to the market place making PEFC the world's largest certification system. The other national members schemes are at various stages of development and are working towards mutual recognition under the PEFC processes.
