Infinity Reference 605c

Component 6.5" Midrange and 1" Silk Dome Tweeter
with 12dB crossover network

I've always like the sound of Infinity's speakers... I have a complete set of the their home speakers. The other nice thing about this set is that (with some adjustments) they fit perfectly into the stock locations of the Quad Cab.

Here is the stock 6 3/4" mid in the bottom of the door. To remove the door it's super easy: 1) remove the screw in the sail pillar opposite the outside mirror, 2) remove the screw hidden by the small "button" behind the door handle, 3) remove the screw behind the door pull itself, then 4) remove two screws at the bottom of the door panel. After that you can simply lift up and door panel will pull out just enough that 5) you can remove the wire harness for power accessories and the two control rods for the handle and door lock. The panel is only held in place by several small "hooks" and NO clips or other anchors. The hardest part are the control rods, because you have a limited about of space to get you hands in to pop them free... if possible have someone hold the door for you to make things easier.

Here I've removed the three long screws holding the stock speaker to the door. There is plenty of room, but depth might be an issue with larger speakers since as you can see the window track is right behind the opening.

The above three photos show the cheap, crappy factory speaker vs the new Infinity Reference 6.5" component mid. While both speakers have the same depth, you can clearly see what junk the factory speakers is. It has a small magnet, a thin metal basket, a weak foam surround and cheap paper cone. The Infinity has a nice rubber surround with a light weight but strong cone plus a much larger magnet. Even though the factory mid is a 6.75" model, it's cone is actually the same size as the Infinity's 6.5 "Plus One" design.

However because of the size difference I had to make a small mounting ring from 1/4" plywood. This photo shows (from left to right) the factory mounting ring (which I will reuse), my custom wood ring and the Infinity mid. If you can trace out a shape and cut out things with a jig saw then you can make this ring too!

Here is everything "sandwitch-ed" together. Some foam gasket material (not shown) will be used to seal all of the parts together so that no bass can leak out and no rattles will develop once attached back onto the door.

Now onto the tweeter install...

If you look closely at the top of the door you'll see some markings indicating where the upgraded factory tweeter goes. Amazingly the aftermarket Infinity 1" Tweeter uses the same sized mounting hole - this is almost too easy!

Here I've cut the hole using a 1 3/4" hole saw attached to a drill. Once cut, simply clean up the rough edges with heavy grit sandpaper or a sharp razor blade/utility knife. The small hole above is where the sail pillar screw goes.

This is the tweeter's mounting bracket from behind, it's a tight fit. The bracket is designed to allow the tweeter to rotate up to 45 degrees for aiming the sound properly.

Now the tweeter is wired up to the crossover and the mid bolted in as well. As you can see there is a nice flat surface away from any possible water leaks to mount the crossover. When wiring the tweeter I chose the -3dB position because my ears are very sensitive to high frequencies, but trust me... it still gets plenty LOUD even at this setting!

These shots show how the tweet looks once fitted in place and the entire panel back on the door. The tweeter is angled slightly (20 degrees) back at occupants to create a nice sound stage. I removed the Infinity logo from the tweeter because at this angle it would have been upside down... and replaced it with a small piece of black tape (impossible to tell since the grill is black too). I have no idea why Infinity choose to put the logo on there in the first place, it looks stupid and attracts unwanted (and needed) attention.

All buttoned up now... the Infinity mid fits directly behind the stock grill and it's not blocked at all, plus none of the screws or the custom trim ring/mounting bracket is visible. This presents a nice and clean factory look, but sounds SO much better of course especially when powered by 55 watts from my amp.
