Kicker S8L52

8" Solobaric Square Subwoofer with Dual (2 ohm) Voice Coils

I've been a huge Kicker fan for years, their subs have always performed well in small sealed enclosures... but their new square Solobarics are simply amazing. You will not believe how much deep, solid, smooth bass comes out of such a small, odd shaped speaker!

Here I am working hard at figuring out the final cut sizes on a full size paper mock-up of the box. A set of "blueprints" is available as a PDF file if you want to try and build this box yourself... just email me and I'll send it out to you.

This shows all the pieces after cutting - from left to right we have: the front, the side, the small top cap, the speaker baffle (bottom w/cut out) and the other side. Finally at the top of the photo is the back, which is the largest piece at 9.5" X 17. Note how the sides have cut out sections or "slots" for the bass to output from the downfiring sub.

This is a dry fit (before glue & screw) of all the pieces except the final side, as you can see the speaker baffle is double thick for extra support.

Here is the last side in position, this gives you an idea of small the bottom of the box is since the speaker opening is 7 1/4" and there is only about 1" of MDF surrounding it on all sides. Now you can understand why I doubled the speaker baffle!

Now everything is glued and screwed into position except for the front panel. At this point we sealed the interior to make sure it was 100% air tight.

Yes it's upside down! No worries... I just took this shot to show how much air space is in there before sealing up the front piece and screwing the speaker in for testing.

All sealed up now... signed and dated by my friend Jan who did all the wood cutting at his shop!

The Sprite can gives you a better idea of how big the box is. Also note the number of screws especially in the area where the wood was doubled to create the speaker baffle. Notice the box does not looked angled in the front, this is because the back is 3/4" short to accommodate the uneven floor of the truck - thus when sitting on a flat level surface the box actually leans back slightly which makes the front look straight - weird huh?!?

The 8" square woofer just fits into the bottom of the box - I wanted the box to have smallest "footprint" possible to make sure the rear passengers did not lose any leg room since it's already tight back there.

Finally... it's all wired up to my amp getting 220 watts and booming away! The front, top and back were carpeted in black while the sides and bottom were sprayed with "Stone Accents" a textured grey-ish faux finish which looks really nice and custom.

Here are slots that allow the bass out of the bottom of the box, this picture clearly shows that the floor is not even and thus the front of the box is longer then the back to compensate for it. Another interesting trick is the sides come down an extra 3/4" to account for the mounting gasket of the subwoofer - so you can see the it even at this low angle.

This is all you can see from the front of the truck. The box is 10 1/2" wide and fits snug between the seats, but they can still recline easily.

All-in-all it came out really good, even my wife things it looks nice. Most importantly it sounds awesome - so you can have "quad" in a Quad Cab Dakota after all! Once again if you want the plans to this box just email me...
